Handcrafted Leather Goods That Last

Handcrafted Leather Goods That Last

There’s much more of a buzz about sustainable fashion than there once was. As we grow more conscious of our impact on the environment, many of us are trying to reverse the damage of the fashion industry, which actually accounts for 8-10% of the world’s global emissions.

Sustainable fashion gives us a huge opportunity to make and consume clothes that protect the environment, reduce emissions, pollution and waste, and tackle the problem of overproduction. And it was out of this that AM Fashion was born.

After I’d finished my leather work and fashion design studies, I’d been working for a few fashion companies. At first, it felt like I’d landed the best roles possible, but it didn’t take long for the novelty to wear off.

I saw a LOT of waste. And I was disappointed to see a lack of artisan techniques. They were occasionally used for high-end customers and luxury goods, but that was it. The mantra was “make everything as fast as possible”, which is a testament to the fast fashion society we live in these days.

It was at this point that I started AM Fashion. I had grown up with the mindset of investing in beautiful items that last – the ones that you cherish and pass on to your loved ones. I wanted to create a company that cultivates this idea; a small, sustainable business that offers timeless pieces that become more precious as the years go by.

All my products are made in the UK with love and care, using mostly offcuts of leather to give the material a second life. I source this material from sustainable costume companies, as well as sustainable shoe and bag brands, to reduce waste within the industry.

As the upcycled leather dictates the design, I typically use a patchwork approach to make timeless, one-of-a-kind leather pieces. I also use artisan techniques like saddle stitch, cross stitch and zig-zag stitch – mainly because it’s such a pleasure to use them! There’s something so rewarding about using strong, elegant hand stitching techniques to breathe new life into leather skins.

Whether you’re looking for a unique upcycled leather bag or quirky toe caps for roller skating, my handmade leather goods are custom designed for you and your adventures. If you’re after a bespoke leather piece or are keen to find someone who can carefully upcycle a treasured accessory, you can reach out to me directly.

And for those of you that would like to learn more about my craft – I’ll be showcasing my brand-new collection at A4 Studio’s free Christmas Makers Market in Altrincham, Manchester on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th November.
